“Okay, actors,” said Rosie. “I want you to ad lib. And . . . action!”

“Add lip?” I said. “You mean be sassy?”

“Ad lib. Invent dialogue to fit the scene. First, get into character. El Gato, you’re the buddy who’ll do anything for a delicious meal. Mr. Puffball, you’re the buddy who wants to be famous, no matter what it takes.”

“Am I the buddy who beatboxes?” asked Pickles.

“Maybe later. Now—quiet on the set! And . . . action!”

“It’s a mighty long way across, buddy,” said El Gato, peering across the canyon. “Isn’t there a diner on this side of the canyon?”

“Perhaps, buddy. But they’ve got the best onion rings on the other side.”

“Can we really jump all the way across the Grand Canyon?”

“Of course! We’re cats, aren’t we?”

“Yeah, we’re cats. Not kangaroos.”

“Cut!” yelled Pickles.

Rosie came out from behind the camera. “Hey! I’m the only one who yells cut!’”

“But I like to yell ‘cut!’ too,” said Pickles.

Eye roll!

Just then a tour bus screeched to a stop nearby.

“Pickles,” said Rosie. “Go over to the nice cats on that tour bus, explain that we’re shooting a film, and politely request they be quiet. Okay?”

“Yes way, José!” He ran off. And quickly returned.

“Pickles!” yelled Rosie happily. “You brought props! I’m making you Head Prop Cat.”
